A magical and beautiful performance of "Messiah"
"Jones has constructed a staged action based on the characters of the soloists.
The tenor has become a young priest who tries to lead and comfort his congregation, the alto has become a desperate mother with a dying son, the bass occupies the role of a prophet of doom and the soprano slips in and out like an angel - a kind of symbol of pure faith.
Jones's concretization of the action makes sense to the abstract: When we hear the tenor convincingly sing "Comfort ye, my people" to his church, we feel the young priest's need to preach. When the alto reads from the Bible in "But Who May Abide the Day of His Coming," we feel her despair through prayer."
